You wouldn’t think a show centered around 30-somethings would have so much pull with girls my age.
Bravo’s “Real Housewives” series began in Orange County and then grew to New York, Atlanta, New Jersey , Beverly Hills and now Miami.
The ladies on these shows have not only had ridiculous amounts of plastic surgery, but the majority of the women on these shows dress inappropriately for their age. So, why are my friends and I so ridiculously obsessed with these shows? Obviously, we can’t relate to them or their fabulous lives, but there a couple key lessons I’ve learned from watching the shows:
1. Don’t mess with an angry lady
Pick your battles wisely and try your best to avoid angering people with bad tempers. The moment that Teresa (New Jersey) flipped over a table, it was made painstakingly clear: You just can’t argue with someone who cannot control their temper. Don’t even bother.
2. Live within your means
Nobody is completely safe from economic troubles. When Lynne (Orange County) discovered she and her family had been evicted by their landlord, it was a huge wake-up call for the family to change its spending habits. Don’t buy things you can’t afford. Plain and simple.
3. Alcohol is a catalyst for drama
I don’t know why, but people always seem to want to discuss serious and important topics while gargling down alcohol. This is never a good idea. If you want an example, please view any season of “Real Housewives,” and you’ll find it.
4. Don’t bring a psychic to dinner… ever…
This is an extended metaphor for that friend who you know doesn’t play with others very well. If you know certain friends aren’t going to mix well, then don’t purposely put them together for a dinner party. It won’t work out. Camille (Beverly Hills) learned this the hard way.
5. Gossip is bad. Very bad.
If you talk about someone behind their back, it will inevitably get back to them (especially if you said it when you were being filmed). Watch your tongue, and you will stay out of lots of drama. Besides, do you really want all that negative energy anyway?
