Boys, if you think you can get away without learning how to cook, think again!
Recent studies have found that women are becoming less domesticated as only 51% of women under the age of 30 know how to cook a roast.
Doesn’t seem so bad? Consider this: 82% of baby boomer females thought preparing a roast was an easy job and knew how to do it!
Why is this happening? Researcher Mark McCrindle told Australia’s Courier-Mail gives an explanation:
“. . . Women of today tend to be busier, juggling more roles, and are quite prepared to compromise a bit of the homemade just to save some time.”
So, what’s the deal? Are gender roles reversing in our society or are women simply taking on more or different roles in our culture?
That being said, while women are becoming LESS domesticated, they are also doing jobs that at one time, were traditionally considered “male” careers.
The study found that 70% of women under 30 take out their own trash, mow the lawn and wash their own cars; 50 years ago, this would not be the case.
The change in skill, career and “abilities” of women today also raises the question: Are gender expectations and roles changing in our society?
Dating research implies exactly that! While men carry the brunt of being “commitmentphobes” who don’t want serious relationships, recent studies find that it’s women who are hesitant to settle down.
A survey of over 5,000 men and women found that men were more interested in love, marriage and children at a younger age than their peers of the past while women were more interested in independent relationships than ladies of the past.
Skeptical? The facts are clear: 54% of men say they have experienced love at first sight, compared with 44% of women; among singles without children, 24% of men say they want children whereas only 15% of women agree.
So, what does this mean for ourselves and the future?
Feminism is on it’s way to succeeding and creating an equalized society where women can change flat tires and men can cook, and where women want meaningful one night stands and men want to settle down with children.
It’s important to realize that these aren’t relevant for EVERY man or woman; for every man who wants to settle down there is one who doesn’t and for every woman who can’t cook there’s one who can.
