Home Life: Taking Time to Be With Family

As scary as this sounds, none of us have any control over when our time on Earth is over.

We are mere mortals and while you may or may not believe in a higher power, you cannot dispute the fact that fate does not let us call the shots.

That being said, it’s hard to keep your priorities in check when you’re in college. These are undoubtedly the most important years of your life and you do have to be a little selfish at times to make sure you get your schoolwork done. You’ll sometimes have to miss your grandma’s birthday or maybe miss a holiday all together if you go to school far away from home.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the partying and studying and forget what’s really important.

As depressing as this sounds, none of your family members will be around forever. While your parents are most likely younger and active now, they won’t be forever. Enjoy them while they can still keep up with you because there will come a day when you will be the one taking care of them.

For those of you who still have living grandparents, you are so much luckier than you know. If you just take the time to call them once a week or even every two weeks, you will make their day. It doesn’t take a lot to keep in contact with anyone as long as you put in the effort.

If you have younger siblings, take the time to show them you care about what’s going on in their lives. While a discussion with your eighth grade sibling on his or her science fair project might seem like the most boring thing in the world, it will mean the world to him or her! Remember that even if they don’t say it, they still look up to you.

Make sure to take the time and let your family members know just how much you love and care about them. You’ll never know when it could be the last time you see them or speak with them.
