It can be easy to get distracted, especially when you’re using the computer to do your work. You could easily jump on Netflix, go on Facebook or surf the internet. However, when an assignment is due or a test is around the corner, it’s important to stay focused.
Getting distracted? Tips on how to stay focused:
1. Block or log out of social media accounts
If social media is a big reason you are not getting things done, block your accounts for a few days. If you do not want to go as far as blocking, simply log out. If you are logged out, you will be less tempted to take the time to log in every time you get an urge to check a social media account. Otherwise, if you’re logged in, all it just takes entering the URL to see all your friend’s updates. That’s where you may get hooked.
2. Avoid going on the internet
You may need to use the internet for part of your assignment, but avoid going on as much as you can. If you do need to use it, only open one tab to research what you need. Then close out when you’re finished. This will help keep you from wasting time surfing the internet when schoolwork needs to get done.
3. Take breaks
Take breaks every hour or so. Anytime you feel frustrated while working, take a break. Stepping away can help you refocus and clear your head. Even though breaks are helpful in keeping focused, it’s important to limit breaks. Too many breaks can keep you from concentrating. An hour or two of deep concentration can be the most effective in getting work done.
4. Eat before you sit down to work
This is so simple. If you are trying to work on an empty stomach, you will not only feel tired, but you will also get distracted by how you are feeling. Be sure to eat something before you sit down to work for long hours. Also, take breaks to snack once you feel hungry again.
5. Listen to music
Sometimes music can help people stay focused. This depends on the person. Some need complete quiet when working while others feel anxious when a room is too quiet. If you think music could help you, give it a try. Listen to gentle, calming songs as you work.
