Staying Active for Cheap

Are you bored with all of the campus activities that are going on at your school, but you can’t really afford to go clubbing or bar-hopping on the weekend? As a typical college student, chances are your finances are fairly limited, which also impacts your options. If you want to add some fun to your social life, here are some things that you can do to stay active without spending a fortune:

Learn an Instrument

It’s amazing how rewarding it can be to learn how to play violin, piano, flute, drums, cello, bass guitar, or any of the other instruments that are taught at school. If your school has a music program, consider signing up for their clubs! You can learn all sorts of amazing things, both about the instrument you play and about yourself. Many of the world-famous musicians of today started out playing an instrument in college, and you may find that you have an innate talent for producing beautiful music once you’ve learned how to play.

Start a blog — are you a writer? Great. You’re not? That’s ok too.

You can start a blog in less than 10 minutes if you wanted to. And you don’t need to make some multi-million dollar platform – a simple blog with a simple idea can take you farther than any fancy, superficial blog ever could. A blog gives you a chance to organize and communicate your ideas to the world while also giving people a chance to find out who you really are!

Start small, don’t get discouraged by assuming you need to have every blog tactic mastered, 1000 followers, or even your own URL claimed – pick something you like, and write about it. What are you passionate about? Are you a sports fan? Are you the biggest move buff you know? Maybe the world needs a quirky, dry, and witty commentary on just how life is at your college. Maybe the world needs an inspiring thought every morning about why to get out of bed; maybe that voice can be yours.

Take Up A New Hobby

Staying out of trouble can be challenging if you don’t have anything to do, so look for a hobby that will take up your time. Why not try building model airplanes, solving puzzles, or cutting hair? If you come up with a hobby that you excel at, you may even be able to make money on the side! Try to find a way that you can turn your college major into a hobby that can earn you some cash, and you’ll be set for the duration of your stay at college — and possibly even land a good job in the future!

Study a New Skill

Do you know how to draw cartoons, write novels, or create music on your computer? Why not look into martial arts classes, boxing lessons, or training for a sport? There are many skills that you can work on while in college, so look into doing something new. You can apprentice yourself to a local professional, or work as an intern at a law office, accountancy firm, or graphic design company. If you want to graduate from college with the skills that will get you a good job, it’s worth spending time developing these while in school — even if you do it for free.

Look for Local Events

There are usually free events held in every city around the country, and you can sign up for these events in order to give yourself something to do. Sign up for a marathon and train hard to get in shape, or look for local groups that do community service or outreach. You’d be amazed by how many different groups you can join in your local community, and they’ll provide you with activities that you can do to help you stay active — all without spending a cent!

These fun frugal ideas are also great as a change of pace, too!
